The origin of the cross - embroidery technique by Oleksandra Natolochna
Hello everyone! Today I will talk about the technique of Ukrainian embroidery. In Ukraine, there was a technique, "christening", which was ancillary. The main ones are a braid, a goat, a chain, a velvet seam and a Bulgarian (double) cross. The most popular today in embroidery is a cross or oblique cross. This is the youngest embroidery technique, which began to spread with the advent of the "Society of Brokers and Co." in 1861, which was engaged in the production of perfumes in St. Petersburg. Ordinary people did not buy expensive cosmetics and soap, they used wood ashes for washing. To sell soap for ordinary people, Heinrich Brokar's wife Charlotte proposed to organize a mass production of soap, which was called "Children's", where the wrapper contained advertising about the company, and on the back - European tapestry sewing schemes. Fashionable pieces for embroidery interested ordinary people, so every time there was a new scheme, people began to sew these ornaments (garlands, insects, flowers, animals, etc.), and because the cross was the only technique that could replace almost all embroidery techniques, it became the most popular.
